WASHINGTON – Chinese e-commerce platforms Shein and Temu are likely responsible for almost 600,000 packages being shipped duty-free to the US on a daily basis. The products are shipped under ‘de minimis’ importing rules which provide admission of products into the US free of duty if the retail value of the product does not exceed US$800.
This figure is equal to more than 30 per cent of global de minimis shipments to the US last year according to a new report from the The US House select committee on China. The committee, which is investigating Temu and Shein, says its latest findings raise serious concerns about products made with forced labour entering the US.
