HELSINKI – The European Commission will consider whether to impose restrictions on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in the European Market due to concerns over health and environmental risks. The step follows proposals prepared by authorities in Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden and submitted to European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). The proposals aim to, “reduce PFAS emissions into the environment and make products and processes safer for people.”
PFAS are a large, complex, and ever-expanding group of manufactured chemicals are widely used to make various types of everyday products, including textiles and clothing. Known as ‘forever’ chemicals, they break down very slowly over time. Because of their widespread use and their persistence in the environment, many PFAS are found in the blood of people and animals all over the world and are present at low levels in a variety of food products and in the environment.
